Gurudwara Sahib Bebe Nanki Ji

This shrine near Lahore honours Bebe Nanki, the elder sister of Guru Nanak, and the first person to recognise what her brother was.

Sikh tradition is unambiguous on this point: before there was a sangat, before the udasis, before anyone else understood, Bebe Nanki knew. She supported her brother when their father did not, and she is remembered as the first Sikh — the first to accept Guru Nanak's teaching. It was she who gave him the rabab that Bhai Mardana played, the instrument that carried the first kirtan.

Her married home was at Sultanpur Lodhi, and it was there that Guru Nanak worked at the modikhana and, according to the accounts, entered the river Bein and emerged after three days to begin his mission. The sites around Lahore associated with her family are visited by yatris who want to give her place in the story its due.

Shrines connected to Bebe Nanki are quieter and less visited than the major gurdwaras, and the schedule for them varies by itinerary and by what access permits at the time.
